Following a vote by PLASTA members, the Trainer of the Year Award for 2016 has been awarded to both Mr Martin Jones & Mr Mark Lloyd. These are the original nominations from their trainees:
Mr. Martin Jones
Mr Martin Jones is a plastic surgery consultant at QVH, East Grinstead. His trainees support his nomination as being a fantastic mentor and trainer who is dynamic, generous and inspiring.
Nominated anonymously by QVH trainees
Mr. Mark Lloyd
We would proudly like to nominate Mr Mark Lloyd for the 2017 PLASTA Golden scalpel award.
Mr Lloyd is welcoming to anyone at any stage of training who seeks his help and advice. He takes a genuine interest in trainees’ career and development and offers personalised advice over meetings in a timely and organised manner. On his days off he sets time for research meeting, ST interview practice, career advice, FRCS teaching or helping trainees who need further support. Time is never an issue and he will spend as long as it takes and however tired he may be. His constructive feedbacks are honest and bold. He sets goals and expects results from his trainees and doesn’t take this lightly.
Mr Lloyd is very passionate about what he does and sets high standards for all those around him. For example, trainees shouldn’t attend his lists without having read the relevant papers- which he has already made available to everyone. He preaches his goal-directed attitude and the principles of hard work and self-disciple as the foundation of success. He takes an active role in the career progression of his trainees and goes above and beyond the call of duty to teach them various skills, whether its scientific writing, presentation or surgical skills. Mr Lloyd was one of the organisers of the WAPS FRCS course in 2016 and further to that offered revision sessions in his own time.
In addition to the above, Mr Lloyds bedside manner and consultation skills are inspiring. He truly exemplifies a patient/ parent centred approach and perhaps this is a reflection of his extensive training in the UK and US. He encourages trainees to attend his clinics as teaching opportunities, and teaches on each and every case, with papers and evidence for further reading. His theatre sessions are organised and efficient and all staff who work with him adopt his high standards and systematized approach. He treats everyone as a team player and with the up most respect and is very much liked by patients, staff, trainees and colleagues.
We feel that Mr Lloyd’s positive and authentic influence on those around him is unique. He is a role model for junior and senior colleagues and is a truly kind and caring person. In our opinion he is certainly more than worthy of this prestigious prize
