BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 PRODID:-/-/EN BEGIN:VEVENT SUMMARY:Basic science For The FRCS(Plast) UID:80 DESCRIPTION:This one day intensive course on Saturday, 27th July 2019 is ideal for trainees in plastic surgery from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong and mainland Europe hoping to pass the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons exit exam in plastic surgery - FRCS(Plast) or European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery - EBOPRAS.  The course will be taught exclusively by me and due to the fewer number of delegates is ideal to ask all the difficult questions that you may have been embarrassed to ask before. No question is stupid on this course! The whole day will be fun. The Mailbox is a modern development in Birmingham City Centre. The meeting room is comfortable, has free Wifi and a suitable learning facility. \n\n \n\nThis is what this course will cover:\n\n \n\nBasic Science - basic science often creates anxiety in candidates as they often do not know the topics that are covered or the how questions may be asked. This section will take up half of the day. I will teach a system of thinking through topics, including vivas, games and make basic science fun! Don’t worry if you have been putting learning basic science off - I love basic science and my intention is that each candidate will leave confident that they can answer most questions in the FRCS(Plast) exam vivas. Also, it’s very useful for EBOPRAS\n\n \n\nCraniofacial - most trainees I meet never have the opportunity to see craniofacial surgery and this often leads them to rely on what’s written in standard texts. Through my technique of teaching systems of thinking through topics each candidate will be encouraged that craniofacial surgery has principles that can easily be remembered and worked through. Also, by knowing how the subject is organised, each candidate will probably know more than most trainees by the end of the day.\n\n \n\nVascular anomalies- this is another subject which trainees often are anxious about, but after the course, I will make clarity of thought achievable even if you have never read on the subject.\n\n \n\nEar reconstruction - autologous ear reconstruction is not just about an operation. It involves assessment of a patient often with craniofacial differences and is a great topic to viva on as it uses many principles of basic science and fundamental plastic surgery techniques. After this interactive session, candidates will be able to draw the design of an autologous framework; understand the various techniques and assess patients for suitability. \n\n \n\nEXTRA MATERIAL PROVIDED ON TAKE HOME USB\n\nHow to publish - I have written over 40 peer review publications with junior doctors who thought they could never publish. Using my system of thinking, I will show you how to take your topic and get it published. Of note, my publications exceed my presentations by 2.5:1 meaning that I don’t believe in talking, I believe in publishing! \n\n \n\nUnited States Medical Licensing Exam - Have you ever wondered what’s involved in preparing for the USMLE exams? This short course takes you through the various steps in a systematic way allowing you to realise that there is no magic in passing these exams. I will also talk about how to set up your fellowship in the USA. I am fully licensed to practice plastic surgery in the USA. After this section, you will know whether you up for it or not!\n\n \n\nTeaching methods\n\n \n\nViva voce questions; games; drawing; role-play; short lectures; systems learning; thought organisation; bullet-point thinking- come prepared to talk!\n\n \n\nTimetable for course\n\n \n\n7.30 am - 8.00am - Registration and Welcome (please bring your own coffee - Care Nero, Starbucks on 1st floor of Mailbox)\n\n \n\n8.00 am - 8.15 am  “Dealing with Fear - mastering the exam”\n\n8.15 am - 9.00 am “Ice-breaker games” showcasing techniques in answering questions  (“System of organisation - Headings, details, gold dust”, “System of anticipation - how to guess the next question, “System of clarification - how to summarise any condition in plastic surgery in 5 words”)\n\n9.00 am - 10.00 am  Basic Science 1 - Coagulation, Embryology of Head & Neck, Cancer genetics, Microbiology, Devices, Microsurgery\n\n10.00 am - 10.20 am - Break & COFFEE (included)\n\n \n\n10.20 am - 12.45 pm  Basic Science 2 - Flaps, Tissue Expansion, Biomaterials, Principles of transplantation, Flaps - how to think about flaps.\n\n \n\n12.45pm to 1.00 pm - walk and be seated for lunch at chosen restaurant in Mailbox facility\n\n \n\n1.00 pm to 2.00 pm - LUNCH (included)  - chance to ask questions\n\n \n\n2.15 pm - 3.50 pm  - Vascular Anomalies \n\n \n\n4.00 pm - 4.50 pm - Ear Reconstruction\n\n \n\n5.00 pm - 6.00pm  Craniofacial & CLOSE\n\n DTSTART:20190727T224000Z DTEND:20190727T224000Z LOCATION:7 commercial street, Birmingham END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
